What is a doula?

A birth doula provides:

Emotional Support

- Affirming and respectful response during pregnancy, labor and postpartum

Physical Support

- Massage
- Labor positioning
- Pressure

Educational Support

- Community resources such as support groups, supplies, medical providers, therapists and more
- Up-to-date information on comfort measures for before and during labor
- Knowledge about medical protocol
- Birth planning
- Advocacy

A doula does NOT perform medical tasks (i.e., placing an IV or checking cervix), make decisions for patients or enforce their own beliefs on patients' birth experience.

A doula is solely there to support the birthing person and their loved ones as they carry out their birth wishes.
